CBC Radio Show on Obesity
This Canadian radio show discusses the factors in the rise in obesity in the world. One doctor, Dr. Richard Atkinson, sites a study that showed that the number of calories consumed and the number of calories expended is not always only factor in obesity.
Another scientist, Dr. Jeffrey Gordon, studied the microbes that lived in the stomach of mice and the amount of the microbes determined how much the mice weighed. To me this was the most intriguing study, the type of bacteria in your stomach determines how well you digest food. If the bacteria are efficient, you will tend to gain weight.
Dr. Nikhil Dhurandhar also studies microbes, viruses. He found that a virus found in chickens that causes them to gain weight and that some obese people carry the same virus.
Listen to the show, the audio is downloadable at the link below. I’m going to play a few of the most interesting bits on the next show.
